The bloody pictures of a man shot dead have actually been circulating around the internet for the last two years. In the wake of news that Al-Qaeda leader Laden had been killed in Abbottabad near Islamabad in Pakistan by American troops, this photo began to be circulated as a picture of the slain terrorist. However, it was soon exposed as a fake on microblogging site Twitter.

The fake picture was first published in a Middle East online newspaper themedialine.org in 2009 but the editors carried a disclaimer with the image that they were "unable to ascertain whether the photo is genuine or not."

The photo has been manipulated from an original image of Laden that was taken and distributed by Reuters news agency in 1998.

Several users on Twitter were quick to show others how to find the image online with a simple search.
