Saranya Ponvannan remembers Maniratnam & Kamal Hassan (TFC)

Saranya Ponvannan is brimming with happiness and confidence. The most-sought after 'mother' in Kollywood has all the reasons to feel delighted as she has just won the coveted national award for the best actress for her role in director Seenu Ramasamy's 'Tenmerku Paruvakaatru'.

Saranya's age (in the early forties, supposedly!) suits her best to play the mother's role for all the young crop of heroes at present. It's to Saranya's credit that she has given an altogether new dimension to the way mother's roles have been perceived in Tamil films. The ever-smiling Saranya has managed to infuse life and realism in the mother's characters that she has portrayed so far.
She says she's thankful to debutant director Ramasamy for choosing her to play the mother's role in 'Tenmerku...' in the first place. Saranya was widely expected to win awards for her role as Vimal's mother in 'Kalavaani' too. Still, she's extremely happy that she has had the honour of bagging the national award for her role in 'Tenmerku...'.
Speaking to newsmen, she says, "I was told by many that one has to have 'contacts' at the right places to win the (national) award...My instinct, though, told me that fair-play would always win...I'm quite happy that my performance has been noted by the Jury of the highest award for acting in the country," she says and adds that she would very much love to be 'blessed' at this moment by Kamal Hassan and Maniratnam, the hero and director (respectively) of her debut Tamil film 'Nayakan'.
She also revealed that she would very much love to don the role of a 'modern mother', which would be a huge cry from the village-based movies that she has played mother roles so far in her career!
