Avan Ivan Review (First On Net) (TFC)
Listen Review:
It was publicised as director Bala's attempt at comedy. Vishal playing a youth with a squint-eye and Arya joining hands with Bala again after Nan Kadavul. The project has everything in it to attract film-buffs. Obviously with big names coming together, hype and expectations are running high on the movie. With sleek promotions and smart publicity, Avan Ivan is now the cynosure of all eyes. Does the end-product live up to the hype? Let's uncover Avan Ivan review...
Story:
Aarya (Kumbiduren Saamy) and Valter (Vishal) are the two sons born to same father but different mothers. Valter lives with his mother Mary (Ambika). The brothers have a gala time in their village living life in their own way. While Valter wants to enter acting in dramas, Saamy wants to do what his father (Super Singer fame Ananth Vaidyanthan) does - indulging in petty robberies.
There is one Jameen (G M Kumar), a rich and influential landlord in the village who had given all his wealth for the villagers and commands their respect in return. He is close to Valter and Saamy. One day, Jameen gets insulted by a forest ranger and he wants to take revnge on them. He takes the help of Valter and Saamy.
The brothers block the way of forest ranger and attack him. Police rush to the spot and Valter escapes, while Saamy takes on his heels.
Meanwhile, Jameen comes across a man (RK) involved in illegal business of sending cattle for slaughter to Kerala from Tamilnadu border. Jameen helps Blue Cross and police nab him. He comes back and takes revenge on Jameen. Now the onus is on Valter and Saamy to take revenge on him for the death of Jameen.
Analysis:
Avan Ivan begins on a bright note. The characterisations by Bala is the hallmark of the movie. He manages to leave a mark with his typical style once the screen unfolds. But beware, it is no normal Bala film. It has its own commercial cliches. It proceeds on predictable path at few places. But the shrewd narration marked with a difference makes the movie count.
There are loads of comedy that is not like the Crazy Mohan stuff one we normally associate in Tamil cinema.
It is more a realistic comedy that we often see in our daily lives. The humour sometimes dark is praiseworthy.
Second half starts on a slow note but proceeds with engaging scenes. The film heads to climax that is wholesome and entertaining. S Ramakrishnan's sweet and simple dialogues bring the lives of innocent rural people before our eyes.
Bala has proved why he is a master filmmaker for he blends commercial cinema with off-beat stuff making the end product awesome and amazing.
Performances:
It's Vishal all the way. The actor who had been doing mindless masalas till now, has brought out his histrionic skills very well. He is amazing and outstanding at a squint-eyed youth. He is good in his body language and dialogue delivery. Bala has discovered a new Vishal.
Not far behind is Aarya. The actor oozes with amazing energy and his comedy skills are a treat to watch. His encounter with police and the chase with them is the hallmark of the film.
Suriya's cameo, Ambika's bold performance and the presence of two leading ladies who emote well - Madhu Shalini and Janani Iyer, deserves an applause.
RK is the typical baddie in the movie. He gives right expressions. As a wicked man, he suits the character well.
Walking away with all honours is G M Kumar. The veteran is the pillar of the film. He lends solidity to the script with is performance. He has proved that not just the lead heroes but even character artistes can lend solidity to scripts with the astute performance. Bala's success in every film lies in casting right persons and extracting the best from each of them.
Technicalities
It is one of the best technically made movies by Bala so far. Arthur A Wilson's camera captures landscapes of Theni in bright light and they look real and as it is on screen. The camera angles too seem to speak something in the film.
Editing by Suresh Urs makes the movie crisp and sharp. It is S Ramakrishnan's dialogues that takes the movie to new heights. Music is another hallmark of Avan Ivan, Yuvan Shankar Raja has stepped into the shoes of his father Ilayaraja it seems. Soul-stirring and soothing are the songs. Suchitra Chandrabose's choreography and Muthuraj's art give authentic feel of being in a rural land.
Plus points
- Bala's narration
- Vishal, G M Kumar's performance
--Yuvan's music
Minus points
- Cliched scenes
- Dragging chase
- Slow second half
Box office predictions:
Avan Ivan will not let down the audience. Though not a typical Bala film, a feel of joy creeps as we watch the film. A neatly-packaged one, Avan Ivan is here to stay

Top 10 most expected Tamil movies in 2011 (TFC)
Movies on the wait list - in near future
10) Raja Pattai
For Vikram, giving much gap for his movies is quite delicate to digest. Hence he clears the decks for moving to projects one after another. While Deiva Thirumagal is ready for release, Vikram has now got the luggage for his next movie Raja Pattai. The director will be Suseendran of Naan Mahan Alla & Vennila Kabbadi Kulu fame. More than these films, Suseendran is on the hot list now with his aimless success of Alagarsamiyin Kudirai, running screen packed. He had his ambition clear for this movie and so he has not made any surprising remarks over AK. Suseendran seems to create his own image by working with somewhat demanding heroes and so his choice for Vettai Mannan is Vikram. He outlined that this film will depict usual formula - romance, comedy and action. Now he has come back from Singapore after getting relieved from the stress of AK.
But he has not wasted his trip since he took Yuvan Shankar Raja to set tunes for Raja Pattai. It is learnt that this movie will have the character rendering of Thambi Ramaiah, the national award winner. The film will be ready for release in the short schedule of two months.
As the title indicates, the film will speak the authority of both Suseendran & Vikram, we can hope.
9) Saguni
If one hero who can boast that he has not made any producer at loss, then it will be Karthi. He has to his credit all his films on the hit list - starting from Paruthiveeran down to Siruthai. In all these 5 years of his professional move his films are choosy but had the reach to the mass.In each of his movies, he had a different role and his talent exhibited his learning from Mani Ratnam camp. He has the flair to deliver the best at ease and his timing of release of his movies gathers more momentum. If one gauges Karthi from the point of view of getting the best then he fills in the void.
His next movie is Saguni, slated for earlier release, with 70 days schedule. The film is directed by the new comer Shankar Dayal. He hinted that the film will be a full length political concept and may be a satire on contemporary politics. With main cast to be let out public the movie is all set to go on screens by this year end.

8o lakhs Grandeur ancient village set for aravaan [TFC]
The film Aravaan prodution by the banner of Amma Creations Mr T.Shiva, And The casting of Aathi, Pasupathi, Archana kavi (introducing actress form Malayalam), Thanshika, Karigalan. This is the next film of director Vasantha Balan after the critical acclaim and popular hits of Veyil and Angaditheru.
The film is based on the slice of south Indian life situated on 18th century.
The film crow searched upon many mountains, caves, war time hidden places of the pandians era , to takeout the period to audience vision. After the searching of three months at last we prefer the place near Madurai melur called Arittapatti Hill.
The Hill is still vergin. And still is not encroached by human beings or stone kuvari people. Its a very amazing hill contains many caves, streams and huge vallys.
On beside of this gorgeous mountain, Art director vijay murugan made the grandeur village set with his huge art work team. The village contains 100 of huts used by bamboo straws, palm leaves and stones. And its also including a big Karuppan kovil, and a manthai which is calling as somberi madam in now days.
The film is growing in this set even under the hottest sun with many character artist and 500 junior artists.
Director Vasandha Balan says “ This Hill and the landscape is very important to reproduce the 18th century . This hill and the set which is created by 80 lakhs expense are occupying important role of this film. Aravaan is growing day and night continuously.
National award beckons Vishal in Avan Ivan? [TFC]
Director Bala has changed the careers of many actors and put them back on track or on the road to stardom. He did wonders for Vikram with ‘Sethu’ and made a star out of Surya in ‘Nanda’ and cast both of them in the mind-boggling ‘Pithamagan’. It appears that Bala has another winner on hand in his upcoming film ‘Avan Ivan’.
This time around, Bala has chosen Vishal who had only been seen in commercial films, to show the actor’s mettle and what he is made up of. It is rumoured strongly in Kollywood that Vishal’s role in ‘Avan Ivan’ is likely to fetch him many an award and it may not be surprising if he even ends up winning the coveted national award for ‘best actor’ for his role in the film.
Vishal, who would be seen along side Aarya, plays a petty thief in the film and has done something that’s unthinkable for any actor on earth: Vishal appears in ‘squint eyes’ in the entire film, straining his cerebral neves to create and sustain that look, against the advice of his family doctor.
For a particular sequence in the film, Vishal was to utter his dialogues in an inebriated condition (for the film, of course). Insiders reveal that Vishal actually drank some ‘liquor’ and did the sequence, which came out very well and made Bala appreciate Vishal’s professional attitude.
Isn’t it what you call as commitment?
